December Year-End Financial Checklist: How to Prepare for 2026
The Power of a December Reset
December isn’t just for peppermint mochas (my holiday favorite) and end-of-year Christmas chaos-it’s for reflection, review, and realignment.
Before January 1st sneaks up, carve out a few quiet hours to look back at the year behind you and get intentional about the one ahead. Whether you’re a small business owner, a side hustler, or simply managing your household’s money, December is your opportunity to pause and plan.
This is your year-end financial reset; a moment to check in on cash flow, celebrate wins, tweak systems, and design a more confident 2026.
Let’s walk through the steps I take myself, and guide my clients through every December.
1. Review Where You’ve Been – Your Year-End Financial Check
Before you dream about 2026, start with a clear look at 2025.
Grab your favorite mug, pull up your QuickBooks, budget spreadsheet or app, or log into your banking portals and ask yourself:
- What went really well this year?
- Where did my money leak-personally or in my business?
- Did my spending align with my values and priorities?
- How did my savings or debt payoff goals progress?
If you own a business, review your Profit & Loss report for the year. Notice trends; were expenses creeping up in one area? Did certain months feel tight? What was the cause of that?
For your personal finances, look back through your bank statements or budgeting app. You might rediscover forgotten subscriptions, “just-this-once” purchases, or quarterly bills that sneak up and throw you off.
Treat this as reflection, not self-critique. You’re collecting data , not judgment.
2. Forecast Your Cash Flow for 2026 – Stay Ahead of Financial Needs
Forecasting your cash flow is one of the best ways to reduce stress and increase financial confidence. It’s how you stay ahead of needs proactively instead of reacting to them.
For Your Personal Finances
- List your recurring expenses – utilities, subscriptions, insurance, groceries.
- Identify annual or irregular expenses like vacations, car registration or renewal, tuition, or home projects.
- Estimate monthly income and savings contributions.
- Build in margin or a buffer – unexpected expenses will happen.
For Your Business Finances
- Review current contracts, pricing, and projected income.
- Estimate recurring expenses (software, marketing, payroll).
- Set aside funds for taxes now; future-you will thank you.
- Plan for growth investments: hiring, equipment, or professional development.
If you follow Profit First principles, now is a great time to reassess your account percentages and reset transfers for the new year. A healthy cash flow plan keeps both your business and household from running on fumes.
3. Create New Goals – Amount, Intensity, and Priority
Once you know where you stand and what’s coming, it’s time to set new goals. But let’s keep it simple.
I like to use this simple statement and framework: From X to Y by WHEN; taking into consideration these key factors: Amount. Intensity. Priority.
Amount
- Decide how much – make it measurable.
- Save $10,000 toward a remodel.
- Increase business profit by 10%.
- Pay off $5,000 in debt.
- You determine the number that works with everything that you know so far.
Intensity
- How much effort or change will this take
- Does this goal require a small tweak or a big lifestyle shift? Knowing the intensity helps set realistic timelines and expectations.
You get to determine if you’re ever so slightly stepping on the gas, if you’re slowing something down, or if you’re putting the pedal to the metal.
Priority
You can do anything, but not everything.
Choose the top 1-2 goals that will have the biggest impact on your peace, purpose, or profitability.
Maybe you feel like you have a dozen things to accomplish, prioritize the list and tackle it one at a time.
4. Schedule a Planning Getaway or Retreat
Some of the best business breakthroughs don’t happen behind a desk-they happen when you step away.
For the past few years, I’ve taken a few days in either October, November or December to ADVANCE not RETREAT from my business. I’ll block out time for a Business Planning Advance – part reflection, part strategy, part deep working session, and part soul check-in.
How to Create Your Own Getaway
- Choose your location: A cozy Airbnb, coffee shop, or quiet cabin. My location of choice is typically our travel trailer up at our little camping spot. It’s usually raining and makes the best ‘hunker down’ time.
- Bring your tools: Laptop, journal, planner, snacks, and a playlist that helps you focus.
- Plan your attack: Determine the work that you’d like to tackle in advance; prioritize that list – you may not get to it all.
If you’re married or have a business partner, invite them into part of this process. Big-picture conversations lead to better alignment and fewer money-related surprises next year.
The complete ‘recipe’ that I use for crafting my annual advance can be found here, shared with other entrepreneurs in a workshop replay.
5. Turn Your 2026 Plan Into Action
eNow it’s time to move from ideas to implementation.
Here’s how to make your financial plan stick with a few tips and tricks:
- Automate savings and recurring payments.
- Adjust budget categories or Profit First allocations.
- Schedule quarterly Money Meetings to check progress, personally and professionally.
- Entrepreneurs pick up my guide to plan your CFO time.
- Review insurance, estate plans, and retirement contributions.
- Update your bookkeeping systems now, not at tax time. Your future self will thank you!
And most importantly: get accountability. Whether it’s a coach, a partner, or your spouse – having someone keep you focused makes all the difference.
6. Finish Strong – End 2025 With Clarity and Confidence
You don’t need a massive overhaul to feel ready for 2026. You just need awareness, clarity, intention, and a plan you’ll actually follow through on.
December is the perfect time to tie up financial loose ends, celebrate progress, and set yourself up for a strong start into the new year.
Don’t wait until January to play catch-up or to commit to change.
